Dr. Wendy Lai 黎詠文

DMD, MSc, BDSc(DH), FRCD(C), Certified Specialist in Endodontics

Diplomate, American Board of Endodontics

Having experienced dental trauma as a young girl that required root canal treatment, Dr. Lai understands firsthand the stress and anxiety patients may feel when undergoing endodontic procedures. This empathy is strengthened by her extensive and diverse background in patient care, developed over years of experience as a Dental Hygienist, General Dentist, and now as a Certified Specialist in Endodontics in both Canada and the United States.

Originally from Hong Kong, Dr. Wendy Lai moved to Vancouver during her teenage years and is fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. She earned her Bachelor of Dental Science degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of British Columbia, where she was also awarded the Darlene J. Thomas Memorial Award in Dental Hygiene. While working as a Dental Hygienist, she discovered her passion for dentistry, which inspired her to pursue further education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. There, she developed a special interest in Endodontics and graduated with a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree earning Honors in Clinical Dentistry and Community Health, as well as the Drs. Samuel and Louis Rossman Endodontic Scholarship Award.

Upon returning to Vancouver, Dr. Lai completed three years of specialty program in Endodontics at UBC where she received extensive training in non-surgical and surgical microscopic endodontic procedures while using the latest equipment and CBCT technology. During her residency, she was a part-time clinical instructor in Endodontics at the UBC Faculty of Dentistry and had the opportunity to provide care for medically compromised patients at Vancouver General Hospital and serve the Haida Gwaii community during her outreach rotations.

Dr. Lai’s passion for teaching continues as she is now a part time Clinical Assistant Professor for the Graduate Endodontics program at UBC where she continues to inspire dental students. Her commitment to educational excellence has been recognized through multiple teaching awards.

Dr. Lai holds a Master of Science degree in Craniofacial Sciences and a Diploma in Endodontics from UBC. She is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, a Certified Endodontic Specialist in Canada and a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics.

Becoming a Diplomate is the highest professional achievement for an Endodontist, recognizing a commitment to excellence and exceptional patient care. This voluntary credential, typically completed over 2 to 8 years after residency, requires candidates to demonstrate advanced knowledge, technical expertise, and clinical judgment through a written examination, presentation of their own clinical cases, and oral examinations conducted by a panel of board examiners.

In her spare time, Dr. Lai loves spending time with her family and friends, travelling, trying new cuisines and practicing yoga to stay healthy.
